meet-and-greet | January 2016

[governors]

The Governors do this, sometimes; they hold a meet-and-greet for the new arrivals to help them get acclimated, and also to distract them from destroying their rooms. A message goes out to all the new arrivals informing them of a party with free food. Everyone likes free food, right?

In one of the recreation areas - sadly, not one of the ones accessible by slide - there are some chips, dip, some sodas and Solo cups, several large pizzas, and a surprising amount of Oreos.

Party.

"I suppose we could go with 'drafted.' How much legitimacy do we want to grant to these guys?"

[toldastory]

The question of legitimacy was one that Martha herself had struggled with. The part of her that would always be a companion to the Doctor wanted to simply go and demand a return to their homes. Another piece however, was the bit that took care of people, and Martha worried over that. What would happen if these people returned home and their timelines were destroyed because something happened? No, that didn't seem right either.

For Martha this felt like a grain of truth. "Drafted might work better. Or borrowed. I like borrowed."

"Borrowed it is." Did they just coin the new euphemism? It seems like they did!

"Have you been assigned to anyone, yet?"

[toldastory]

They definitely did. At least it sounds better than being stolen or something like that. More important at least if nothing else. Martha likes it, and she raises her hand so he can see how blank it is. "Not yet. You?"

Malcolm was a little confused by the gesture and looked at his own arm. "...I think I might have missed a memo. There's supposed to be a mark?"

He should have read the starting stuff better.

[traqueur]

"One of the bartenders let it slip when I was doing a bit of exploring." Which was actually companioning, and trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Some things didn't really change, especially when circumstances became exceedingly weird. This definitely qualified for that. "When we're matched up with someone, we'll get a mark matching theirs. Which makes sense, I suppose."

"Huh. Well I guess I'm getting that tattoo after all."

[traqueur]

"It's not so bad, I don't think. Could be much worse. At least it's not a brand, or a septum piercing or the like." Martha looking on the bright side of things in a situation that just seemed entirely too surreal.

"Every cloud has a silver lining if you look at a polluted lake by comparison, sure..." Malcolm laughed. "Although maybe that's a bit judgmental of people who get septum piercings."

Martha touched the multiple holes on her ears, and she smiled. Once, a septum piercing might not have been so out of bounds if she'd not wanted to be a doctor so badly. So, Martha just laughs softly and gives a bit of a shrug. "Well, they're not for everyone, I guess."

"Those are nice," Malcolm said. "The earrings." He'd noticed her touch them.

"I almost got an earring myself, in my rebellious teenager phase. I chickened out, though. Needles give me the heebie jeebies."

[traqueur]

"Thanks," the words came with a quick and bright smile. "My one act of teenage rebellion, three holes in each ear and a tattoo." But then the smile turned sympathetic. "Needles used to do that to me too, but then I realized how many I'd be using as a doctor. So I needed to let my fears go. That was part of the rebellion, I think."

"Doctor, wow. That's crazy stuff."

[traqueur]

"Well, I think that my skills would be better used in the medical wing than being a sentinel, but it's not as if I've a choice, yeah?" Martha doesn't exactly sound happy about this; she spent so long attempting not to be a soldier while working for UNiT and now here it was that she didn't even have a choice about any of it.

"I don't think being a sentinel necessarily means taking bullets, or they'd have picked people who are really good at taking bullets, right? If this is fate, it's about you being in the right time and place to treat a bullet wound, and that's probably not inside a clinic."
