[governors]

The Governors do this, sometimes; they hold a meet-and-greet for the new arrivals to help them get acclimated, and also to distract them from destroying their rooms. A message goes out to all the new arrivals informing them of a party with free food. Everyone likes free food, right?

In one of the recreation areas - sadly, not one of the ones accessible by slide - there are some chips, dip, some sodas and Solo cups, several large pizzas, and a surprising amount of Oreos.

Party.

"Probably," Jack echoes with nod. "Most people's backgrounds fall into 'probably' around here, I'm betting."

He takes the offered hand firmly. "Jack Metcalfe. How does it feel to have the fate of the universe in your hands?"

It's an ambiguous question, referring to both himself and Malcolm's position as a sentinel. Jack is interested in getting peoples' take on this whole thing.

"Kind of unbelievable, like I got suckered into a timeshare meeting."

"That's a pretty mundane comparison," Jack chuckles. "But I get what you mean. One of those 'heroes are made' sort of deals, without asking if they want it. Not an ideal way to raise an army."

At least you get the option to leave some day, he doesn't say.

"Mundane is what'll be written on my tombstone, I'm pretty sure. After a very short life spent revolving around extraordinary people."

"You're here, Malcolm. I'm pretty sure that makes you one of the extraordinary people," Jack says simply, gesturing to the rest of the room. The young man might not be Fatemarked, but he had been 'recruited' for a reason. "Why might not be obvious, but maybe you'll figure it out while you're here."

"Ha, maybe. I think Occam's Razor favors clerical error, though."

[aquilawful]

"Well, if we're talking Monopoly, clerical error is usually in your favor," Jack replies, trying to inject a little lightness.
